What is commercial glass recycling in London?

Commercial glass recycling means collecting your bottles and jars in their own container, kept apart from general rubbish and from dry mixed recycling. For most hospitality sites that is one clearly marked glass bin and a simple rule for staff: bottles and jars go in here, nothing else.

London glass recycling is a dedicated business stream

Glass is heavy and it breaks. Mixed in with card, plastic and metal it shatters into the lighter material and spoils it. A separate bin keeps broken glass out of the dry recycling and gives staff one instruction to remember.

London glass recycling is not part of Capital Recycle DMR

Don’t put bottles or jars in Capital Recycle’s dry mixed recycling sacks or bins. The dry mixed recycling collection page covers that stream. This page is about glass only.

Which glass can a London business recycle?

The service is built around glass packaging on the accepted-materials list we give every account. Bottles and jars are the normal starting point. Anything else made of glass, check with us before it goes in the bin.

Bottles in London commercial glass recycling

Empty drinks bottles and other accepted bottle packaging go in the dedicated bin. Tip the liquid out first. A bin full of dregs is heavier, harder to move and not what was quoted.

Jars in London commercial glass recycling

Empty jars can go in where they match the agreed spec. Scrape the food out so the glass bin doesn’t turn into a food-waste bin.

Non-packaging glass in London commercial recycling

Mirrors, ceramics, drinking glasses, window panes and oven-proof glass are made differently from bottles, and some are a handling risk. Show us these before a collection. The bottle-and-jar bin isn’t a catch-all for everything breakable.

Why does London glass recycling use a 240-litre bin?

Capital Recycle’s glass service is capped at a 240-litre bin. That size keeps a heavy stream in a container that can still be wheeled safely to the collection vehicle.

A London glass bin must remain movable

There’s no published kilogram allowance for the glass bin. The working rule is practical: the bin has to be safe to move. If access, a slope or overfilling stops that, the collection can’t go ahead as quoted.

A larger London bin is not automatically better for glass

A 660-litre or 1,100-litre bin looks like fewer lifts, but full of glass it gets too heavy to move safely. The 240-litre cap is part of how the service is designed, not an invitation to half-fill something bigger.

How should London hospitality businesses separate glass?

Glass separation works when it starts where the bottles are emptied. One main bin out the back isn’t enough if staff have nowhere obvious to put glass mid-service.

Put London glass containers near the point of use

Keep small tubs behind the bar or by the prep area and empty them into the main glass bin. Give every shift the same instruction.

Keep London glass separate from food and residual waste

Caps, packaging, napkins and food go in their own streams. Empty the bottles before they go in the glass bin and keep bags of mixed rubbish out of it.

Plan London glass collection around peaks

Weekend trade, private events and the seasons all change how many bottles you get through. Tell us about the busy periods at quote stage so the collection pattern fits your busiest normal week, not a quiet Tuesday afternoon.

How can London businesses handle glass safely?

Glass needs a bin that stands level and a clear route out. The lid still has to shut. Staff shouldn’t press glass down by hand or leave loose broken glass where someone has to lift it.

Keep the London glass bin upright and accessible

Store the bin on level ground where it can be wheeled out without steps or obstructions. If the access changes after setup, tell us before the next collection.

Do not overfill a London commercial glass bin

The lid should close and no bottle should stick out of the top. An overfilled bin is harder to move and puts your staff and the collection crew within reach of broken glass.

Ask before presenting unusual London glass waste

Large panes, mirrors, ceramics and mixed demolition glass aren’t a bottle-and-jar collection. Describe them separately so the job can be assessed on what’s actually there.

How is a commercial glass recycling quote calculated in London?

The quote depends on how many 240-litre bins you need, how often they’re collected, the access and the kind of glass you produce. This site doesn’t publish a generic lift price.

London glass volume sets the collection frequency

Estimate how many bottles you get through or how fast the current bin fills, busy days included. If the bin keeps overflowing, that’s a frequency problem, not a reason to ignore the 240-litre limit.

London glass access shapes the collection

Tell us where the bin lives, how it gets to the collection point and whether the route is level. A photo or a short video usually settles the access questions before we quote.

London glass collection can sit beside other streams

Most sites run glass alongside their other commercial recycling collections in London, such as dry mixed recycling and card and paper. Where the food-waste rule applies to you, ask us about the right collection route. The commercial recycling setup checker helps you list each stream so the quote doesn’t turn into a memory test.

Commercial glass recycling questions for London businesses

Can London businesses put glass in dry mixed recycling?

No. Glass is a separate Capital Recycle stream and shouldn’t go anywhere near the DMR.

What size glass bin does Capital Recycle use in London?

A 240-litre bin. Larger glass bins are outside this service.

Is there a weight limit for Capital Recycle glass bins in London?

We don’t publish a kilogram limit. The bin has to stay safe and movable to the vehicle, with access as quoted.

Can London bars recycle drinking glasses with bottles?

Don’t assume so. Drinking glasses are often a different glass from bottles. Show us the item and stick to the accepted-materials list you get with the service.

Can London restaurants recycle jars in the glass bin?

Empty jars, yes, where they’re part of the agreed glass-packaging stream. Scrape out the food and don’t use the bin for food waste.

Can London businesses use bags for commercial glass recycling?

Not on this service. Capital Recycle’s commercial glass collection uses a dedicated 240-litre bin that has to stay safe and movable to the vehicle.
