What is dry mixed recycling for London businesses?
Dry mixed recycling (DMR) is one container for the clean, dry recyclable packaging a workplace produces, collected on a recurring round. The point is to make everyday separation practical, so recyclable packaging doesn’t end up in the general rubbish.
London DMR is a material stream, not a universal bin list
What goes in is set by the collector, based on the route and where the material is processed. Plastic bottles, pots and tubs, and drinks cans and food tins are the everyday contents. Paper and card need a separate decision, because current guidance expects them to be collected on their own by default.
London DMR must stay separate from residual waste
Once recycling has been separated for collection, it can’t be mixed back in with non-recyclable waste. On site, that means the DMR container needs a clear label and a spot that doesn’t invite food or general rubbish.
London DMR does not include Capital Recycle’s glass stream
Bottles and jars are heavy, and broken glass can damage or contaminate a mixed load. Capital Recycle collects glass as a dedicated commercial glass recycling stream, never in DMR.
Which materials can go in London dry mixed recycling?
Start with clean, dry packaging that’s on the accepted-materials list agreed for your site. Empty everything before it goes in, and keep food and liquid out. General rubbish stays in its own bin.
Plastic and metal packaging in London DMR
Empty plastic bottles, pots and tubs, and drinks cans and food tins are the everyday examples. Everything should be empty. If your business produces an unusual rigid plastic or a composite item, show it to us rather than assuming the word “plastic” on the label makes it acceptable.
Cartons in London DMR
Food and drink cartons are composite packaging. Current government guidance classes them with plastic, not with paper and card. Whether cartons go in your DMR still depends on the accepted-materials list we give every account — show us what you produce and we’ll confirm.

Paper and card in a London DMR arrangement
Under Simpler Recycling, paper and card must be collected separately from plastic, metal and glass by default. A collector may co-collect them with the other dry recyclables only where a written co-collection assessment concludes that separate collection isn’t technically or economically practicable, or has no significant environmental benefit. We’ll tell you which arrangement applies to the service we quote.

Why are paper and card sometimes separate from London DMR?
Paper and card spoil easily. A splash of coffee or a greasy tray can write off a whole bag of otherwise clean fibre. Keeping them apart protects the material, especially where the premises unpacks a lot of dry boxes or produces office paper.
A London business with high cardboard volume may need a dedicated stream
Retailers, workspaces, hospitality businesses and stock rooms can fill a container with boxes long before they fill it with plastic or metal packaging. A dedicated cardboard and paper recycling collection makes the storage point easier to manage.
A London business with low paper volume may use an assessed arrangement
Where card and paper volumes are small, the collector may assess whether co-collection with the other dry recyclables is justified. The written assessment belongs to the collector. The business still has to follow the container instructions that come out of it.
Should London dry mixed recycling use bags or bins?
Either. Which one depends on weekly volume, where the waste can be stored, how the crew gets to it and how it can be put out for collection.
London DMR bags suit premises with little storage
Sacks work for shops, cafés and small offices where a wheelie bin can’t stay on site. You fill the marked recycling sack and put it out in the agreed way. The detail on sacks is on Capital Recycle’s commercial bag collection page.
London DMR bins suit steady recurring volume
Bins work where the premises has a suitable internal or external storage point and produces a steady volume week to week. Bin collection London covers the container formats.
How can a London business prevent DMR contamination?
Contamination usually starts with a vague label or a bin in the wrong place. Sometimes nobody told the staff. The fix is usually simpler than another policy document.
Label London DMR at the point where waste is discarded
Put the instruction where the decision happens: next to the counter, the printer, the kitchen exit or the unpacking bench. Use examples from your own premises, not a generic recycling poster that lists materials the collector doesn’t take.
Keep food and liquid away from London DMR
Empty the packaging and keep the recycling dry. One half-full drink or a food-covered tray can spoil a much larger quantity of clean material once it’s in the same container.
Review repeated London DMR mistakes before collection day
If the same wrong item turns up every week, change the setup rather than blaming the staff. Move the residual bin closer, or rewrite the label in the words people at that site actually use. If food is the problem, ask us about the right collection route for it. Our commercial recycling contamination guide walks through the troubleshooting in order.
How does a dry mixed recycling collection start in London?
It starts with you telling us what you produce and how we’d get to it. You end up with an agreed container and an accepted-materials list. The collection pattern follows from that.
Describe the London DMR material mix
Tell us what the business does and which packaging turns up most. A photo of a typical day tells us more than an estimate made straight after a collection, when everything looks empty.
Confirm the London DMR storage and access
Show us where full bags or bins will wait and how they get to the collection point. Mention any local rules on presentation if material has to go out on the public highway.
Agree the London DMR collection and records
We quote each site individually; there’s no generic tariff. Once the recurring collection is set up, the waste transfer paperwork records the stream and the parties involved.
How is a dry mixed recycling quote calculated in London?
A DMR quote comes down to volume, frequency, container type, access and the material specification. No single online figure can describe all five honestly.
London DMR volume and frequency affect the collection design
Count typical bags, or tell us how quickly a known bin fills. Flag seasonal peaks and event days. Understate a peak and you get overflow; overstate it and you pay for capacity you don’t use.
London DMR quality affects the collection design
Clean separation is what the accepted-materials list requires. If the container regularly carries food or general rubbish, the stream we quoted and the waste we collect no longer match. The fix is better separation on site.
Dry mixed recycling questions for London businesses
Can London DMR include cardboard boxes?
Only under the right arrangement. Paper and card are separate by default. They can share a dry-recycling collection only where the collector has completed the required written assessment and confirms that setup for your site.
Can London DMR include glass bottles?
No. Glass is a dedicated stream on Capital Recycle’s service and should never go in DMR.
Must food packaging be emptied before it goes in London DMR?
Yes. Packaging goes in only when it’s empty and the material is on the accepted list. Anything still carrying food or liquid stays out of the dry stream.
Can London DMR include plastic film?
Don’t assume so. Film isn’t on every collector’s accepted list, and the route for your business needs confirming with your collector. Show us what you produce and we’ll say whether it fits the stream.
How should a London business label a DMR container?
Name the actual accepted items used at the premises, such as empty plastic bottles, pots and tubs, and drinks cans and food tins. Put the DMR label beside separately labelled food and residual-waste options so staff can act on it at the point of disposal.
Can a London business switch from mixed rubbish to DMR gradually?
Yes, provided the site already keeps dry recyclables, food waste and general waste separate as the rules require. Start with the cleanest, easiest material group and check whether staff use the container properly. Add another stream once there’s enough volume and a clear instruction, rather than putting out several half-understood bins at once.
