What is commercial cardboard recycling in London?
Commercial cardboard recycling means your boxes and other agreed paper-based packaging get collected separately from the residual waste. It makes most sense where card is a regular, measurable part of the business rather than the odd box.
London cardboard recycling protects a clean material stream
Cardboard is easier to recycle when it stays dry and out of the general rubbish, away from food and oil. A container of its own makes that instruction visible to staff and stops boxes eating the space meant for general waste.
London paper recycling can share the same dedicated stream when agreed
Office paper and other accepted paper can usually go in with the cardboard where the collection specification allows it. Confidential paper and coated or laminated products may need a different service, so flag them before we quote.
When should a London business separate cardboard from dry mixed recycling?
Current guidance says paper and card must be collected separately from plastic, metal and glass under Simpler Recycling, unless the collector holds a valid written co-collection assessment. So the default is a separate stream, distinct from any combined dry mixed recycling (DMR) arrangement.

High-volume London cardboard usually earns its own container
If boxes fill most of the recycling space, a separate stream is easier to label and keep an eye on. Retail deliveries, office moves, stock handling and hospitality supplies all tend to produce that pattern.
Low-volume London cardboard may sit within an assessed collection
A small premises may not produce enough card to make a standalone container practical. In that case, check whether a written co-collection assessment is in place before assuming card can sit inside a combined dry stream. The colour of the bag on its own tells you nothing about that.
Which page to read if your card goes in with the rest of your recycling
This page covers a dedicated card and paper collection. If your card goes in with the rest of your dry recycling, the London dry mixed recycling page is the one to read. Both sit under our commercial recycling collections for London businesses.
Which cardboard can a London business present for recycling?
The accepted list is agreed when the collection is set up. Until then the rule of thumb is simple: keep the material dry and take out anything that obviously isn’t paper. If something looks unusual, send us a photo.
Corrugated boxes in London cardboard recycling
Delivery and shipping boxes are the bulk of it. Empty them and flatten them where you can, so the storage point holds card rather than trapped air.
Paper packaging in London cardboard recycling
Clean paper bags, sleeves and similar paper packaging can be suitable where they match the service specification. Packs with a plastic or foil layer need checking first.
Food-soiled card in London cardboard recycling
Grease and food residue drag down the quality of a paper stream. Keep heavily soiled items out unless the collection specification says otherwise.
How should a London business store cardboard for collection?
Keep it dry and contained, somewhere the crew can reach it. The exact container depends on the site and the volume.
Flatten London cardboard without creating an unsafe stack
Flattening saves space, but a loose tower of card can topple or block a route. Use the agreed storage point and keep escape routes clear.
Keep London cardboard away from rain and food residue
Wet card is heavier and harder to recycle. Keep it under cover and away from leaking food or drink containers.
Present London cardboard at the agreed collection point
Tell us whether the material comes out through a service corridor or a spot on the pavement. We quote on the access you describe, so a photo saves everyone a wrong assumption.
How does commercial paper recycling work in London offices?
Start by working out what paper the office actually produces. Printer paper and confidential records don’t always belong in the same service.
Ordinary office paper in a London paper stream
Clean office paper can form part of an agreed card and paper collection. Put small containers near the printers or work areas and empty them into the main collection container.
Confidential paper in a London paper stream
Documents with personal or commercially sensitive information may need a secure destruction service. Tell us about confidential material before collection. Don’t drop it into a general paper container and assume recycling on its own gives you the security you need.
How is a cardboard recycling quote calculated in London?
There’s no single price for cardboard collection. The quote depends on volume, how often you need a collection, the container format, access, and whether the material arrives as a clean separate stream.
London cardboard volume should be measured after a normal trading period
Count the boxes or photograph the storage point just before a collection, not straight after it’s been cleared. Tell us about seasonal peaks, move-ins or delivery days that change the pattern.
London cardboard access changes the collection task
The collection point, the distance to the vehicle and the time you’re allowed to present the material all matter. Give us those details at quote stage so the service is designed around the real route through the premises.
London cardboard contamination changes the collection task
A clean dry stream is a different job from boxes mixed with food or residual waste. Our recycling contamination guide for London businesses explains how to find the point where the wrong material gets in.
Commercial cardboard recycling questions for London businesses
Can London shops store delivery boxes for a recurring cardboard collection?
Yes, as long as the boxes stay dry and contained until collection. Describe the delivery pattern and photograph the normal pre-collection pile so storage and frequency can be worked out together.
Is commercial cardboard recycling in London free?
Don’t assume so. A collection still means a container on site and a crew to move the material. We quote for the premises rather than advertising a free-cardboard offer that may not apply to your job. We don’t pay for cardboard either.
Can London businesses put tape on cardboard recycling?
Ordinary parcel tape on a delivery box is normal and isn’t what decides the service. Heavily mixed packaging is different, so show it to us during the assessment and follow the accepted-materials instruction issued for the collection.
Can London businesses put wet cardboard in recycling?
Keep wet cardboard out of the clean stream. Store boxes under cover and stop liquid getting into the container.
Can London businesses recycle confidential paper with cardboard?
Only once the security question has been dealt with. Confidential records may need a secure destruction route rather than ordinary mixed paper recycling.
Should cardboard be flattened before a London business collection?
Flatten boxes where you can. It cuts trapped air and makes the volume easier to judge. Keep the flattened card inside the agreed container or storage point so it doesn’t turn into an unsafe stack.
